Recent Events of Grieg Societies 2015

On November 15, the Grieg Begegnungsstätte Leipzig e.V. (the German Society of Edvard Grieg) presented a concert with Diana Mos, violin, and Valentina Sandu-Dediu, piano from the National Music University in Bukarest. Works included Grieg, Debussy, and Dediu. On November 7, the society celebrated its 10th anniversary of the opening of their location at Talstrasse 10. The 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Grieg Begegnungsstätte was held in Leipzig on October 27, with performances of Grieg. For more information, visit: http://www.edvard-grieg.de/

The Russian Grieg Society often organizes concerts in Sweden, Norway and Russia (predominantly Moscow) that include performances of young children and seasoned artists. A recent concert was held at the Moscow Conservatory’s hall and was entitled “Music without Borders – Ties between Generations”. Young gifted musicians performed Grieg and Norwegian pianists, Joachim Kwetzinsky and Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, both performed during the concert. Aleksandr Trishkin, student of Conservatory’s College in Moscow, performed the 1st movement of Grieg’s concerto. The professor of the Gnesin’s Academy of Music in Moscow, Aleksandr Zagorinsky, also played with Mr. Steen-Nøkleberg.  In August, the society presented concerts in Stockholm at Sofia church. In September, the society presented concerts at the Russian Embassy, Russian-Norwegian Culture Center, and Kongsberg’s and Ski’s high schools in Norway.

On November 13, the Grieg Society of Great Britain presented the British premiere of John Carmichael’s  Serenade for Flute and Piano. The evening also included works of Grieg, Carmichael, Grainger and Saint-Saëns. The performance took place at Schott’s Music Shop in London. For more information, visit: http://griegsociety.co.uk/

The Edvard Grieg Society of Minneapolis celebrated its 10th Anniversary from September 18-20.  Programs included lecture-performances and performances at Norway House, Augsburg College, and Mindekirken, The Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church in Minneapolis. Performers were Rolf Erdahl, Carrie Vecchione, Dan Dressen, Sonja Thompson, Sylvia Eckes with commentary by William Halverson, and students of Norwegian-founded area colleges. On October 9, at Mindekirken in Minneapolis, the Leif Eriksson International Festival and Edvard Grieg Society of Minneapolis presented Norwegian pianist, Rune Alver in works of Grieg and other Norwegian composers. In cooperation with the Edvard Grieg Society of America, Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana, invited well-known Norwegian bass-baritone and Grieg specialist, Njål Sparbo, as visiting artist. On November 4, there was a lecture-demonstration of Grieg songs and choral works with Mr. Sparbo assisted by Mary Rose Norell and Luke Norell, piano, and a performance of two of the Four Psalms, Op. 74, with the Goshen College Chamber Choir. On November 5, Njål Sparbo conducted a vocal master class with Goshen voice students.

Visiting artist, Njål Sparbo, gave a vocal master class at Indianapolis University. At Zion Evangelical Church of Christ in Indianapolis, Indiana, on November 8,  there was a lecture-demonstration of Grieg Songs with Njål Sparbo assisted by Gregory Martin, piano. The South Bend Area Music Teachers Association in Indiana hosted an all- Grieg presentation and performance on Wednesday, October 14. Mary Rose Norell and Luke Norell, piano performed a program that included piano works from Op. 17, Op. 66, and Op. 72, the Ballade, Op. 24, and the Norwegian Dances, a duet.
